¡Ay, chévere!
[Wow, cool!] Pax exclaimed, his eyes wide. The red shell pulsed with a soft, internal light. The attic, moments before dusty and dull, now felt electric. Maya, ever the careful one, held her breath.

“¿Será mágico, Maya?”
“Could it be magical, Maya?” Pax asked, his voice filled with wonder. He bounced on the balls of his feet.

Maya’s brow furrowed. “Remember what Abuelo said? That the Spondylus was sacred? Maybe… maybe there’s something special about it. He said that it connected our ancestors with the gods, and was more valuable than gold!”

“¡Más valioso que el oro! ¡Guau!”
“More valuable than gold! Wow!” Pax repeated, reaching out to touch the shell again.

As their fingers brushed against the spiky surface, the humming intensified. The light grew brighter, warmer. Details in the attic began to blur. The old trunks, the cobwebs, the faint smell of Abuelo’s pipe tobacco… it all started to waver.

“¡Maya, mira! ¿Qué está pasando?”
“Maya, look! What’s happening?” Pax cried, grabbing her hand tighter.

Maya squeezed his hand back, her eyes wide with a mixture of fear and excitement. The light was blinding now, consuming the attic, the house, everything around them. The last thing they saw before the world dissolved into pure, radiant energy was each other’s faces, filled with a mixture of terror and breathless anticipation.

¡De una! ¡Esta aventura va a ser increíble!
