[Narrador] El viento frío de Marzo soplaba a través de los Andes, haciendo temblar a Pax y Maya. El eco de las palabras del anciano aún resonaba en sus oídos: Manco Cápac, el bastón de oro, la tierra fértil.
[Narrator] The cold March wind blew through the Andes, making Pax and Maya shiver. The echo of the old man’s words still resonated in their ears: Manco Cápac, the golden staff, the fertile land.
[Pax] ¡Achachay! ¡Qué frío, ñaño! ¿Cómo se supone que vamos a encontrar comida con esta leyenda? ¿Qué tiene que ver un bastón de oro con papas, choclos, o… ¡frituras!
[Pax] Brrr! It’s so cold, brother! How are we supposed to find food with this legend? What does a golden staff have to do with potatoes, corn, or… fries!
[Maya] Tenemos que pensar, Pax. Manco Cápac fundó Cusco, ¿recuerdas? Él buscaba una tierra donde el bastón se hundiera fácilmente. Tal vez… tal vez la clave está en la tierra misma.
[Maya] We have to think, Pax. Manco Cápac founded Cusco, remember? He was looking for land where the staff would sink easily. Maybe… maybe the key is in the land itself.
[Pax] ¿La tierra? ¡Pero toda esta montaña es tierra, Maya! ¿Qué estamos buscando? ¿Tierra mágica? ¡Ojalá fuera tierra llena de papas fritas mágicas!
[Pax] The land? But this whole mountain is land, Maya! What are we looking for? Magical land? I wish it was land full of magical french fries!
[Maya] ¡Espera! Recuerda lo que Taita Simón nos contó sobre las profecías. Él habló de la profecía de los extraños barbudos.
[Maya] Wait! Remember what Taita Simón told us about the prophecies. He talked about the prophecy of the bearded strangers.
[Pax] ¿Extraños barbudos? ¿Te refieres a los españoles? ¿Qué tiene que ver eso con Manco Cápac y el hambre, chévere?
[Pax] Bearded strangers? You mean the Spanish? What does that have to do with Manco Cápac and hunger, cool?
[Maya] Exacto. La profecía decía que hombres pálidos con barba llegarían desde el mar y gobernarían estas tierras. Esto debilitó al Imperio Inca. Mira, *ñaño*, **la profecía de los extraños barbudos jugó un papel importante en la caída del Imperio Inca. Muchos creían que la llegada de los españoles era el cumplimiento de esa profecía, lo que generó confusión y división. Esto facilitó la conquista.** Esto significó que las rutas de comercio y distribución de alimentos se interrumpieron, causando hambruna.
[Maya] Exactly. The prophecy said that pale men with beards would arrive from the sea and rule these lands. This weakened the Inca Empire. Look, brother, **the prophecy of the bearded strangers played a major role in the fall of the Inca Empire. Many believed that the arrival of the Spanish was the fulfillment of that prophecy, which caused confusion and division. This facilitated the conquest.** This meant that trade routes and food distribution were disrupted, causing famine.
[Pax] ¡Ah, ya entiendo! Entonces, no podemos ignorar la historia de la conquista. Tiene que haber algo que los Incas escondieron o protegieron antes de que llegaran los españoles. ¿Tal vez un granero secreto o una fuente de agua oculta?
[Pax] Ah, I get it! So, we can’t ignore the history of the conquest. There must be something the Incas hid or protected before the Spanish arrived. Maybe a secret granary or a hidden water source?
[Maya] De una. Tenemos que buscar signos de resistencia Inca, Pax. Algo que demuestre que intentaron proteger sus recursos. ¡Quizás un sistema de andenes escondido!
[Maya] For sure. We have to look for signs of Inca resistance, Pax. Something that shows they tried to protect their resources. Maybe a hidden system of terraces!
[Pax] ¡Andenes! Buena idea, Maya. Usaban esos para cultivar en las montañas. ¡Si encontramos andenes escondidos, podríamos encontrar comida! ¡Vamos!
[Pax] Terraces! Good idea, Maya. They used those to grow crops in the mountains. If we find hidden terraces, we might find food! Let’s go!
