Maya y Pax caminaban entre las ruinas, el sol de enero calentando la tierra. Pax, con su concha de Spondylus, sentía la historia vibrar bajo sus pies.
Maya and Pax walked among the ruins, the January sun warming the earth. Pax, with his Spondylus shell, felt the history vibrate beneath his feet.
Maya señaló un pequeño montículo cubierto de hierba. ‘Mira, Pax. Aquí es donde probablemente trabajaban el platino y el oro. Era algo muy especial para ellos.’
Maya pointed to a small, grass-covered mound. ‘Look, Pax. This is probably where they worked with platinum and gold. It was something very special to them.’
Pax frunció el ceño. ‘¿Platino? ¿Oro? ¿Aquí en La Tolita? ¡Chévere! Pero, ¿cómo?’
Pax frowned. ‘Platinum? Gold? Here in La Tolita? Cool! But how?’
Maya sonrió. ‘Estos no eran los ‘gigantes’ de los que hablamos antes, Pax, sino artesanos ingeniosos. Usaban técnicas muy sofisticadas.’
Maya smiled. ‘These weren’t the ‘giants’ we talked about before, Pax, but ingenious artisans. They used very sophisticated techniques.’
Maya continuó: ‘Imagínate, Pax. Recogían pepitas de oro de los ríos cercanos. El platino era más difícil porque no se funde fácilmente con las herramientas de la época.’
Maya continued: ‘Imagine, Pax. They collected gold nuggets from the nearby rivers. Platinum was harder because it doesn’t melt easily with the tools of the time.’
Pax: ‘¡Qué difícil! ¿Cómo lo hacían entonces?’
Pax: ‘How difficult! How did they do it then?’
‘Usaban un proceso llamado sinterización’, explicó Maya. ‘Molían el platino en un polvo muy fino y lo mezclaban con oro. Luego, calentaban la mezcla a altas temperaturas, ¡pero no lo suficiente para fundirlo! Esto hacía que los metales se unieran.’
‘They used a process called sintering,’ Maya explained. ‘They ground the platinum into a very fine powder and mixed it with gold. Then, they heated the mixture to high temperatures, but not enough to melt it! This caused the metals to bond together.’
‘¡Asombroso!’, exclamó Pax. ‘¿Y qué hacían con eso?’
‘Amazing!’, exclaimed Pax. ‘And what did they do with it?’
Maya respondió: ‘Hacían adornos hermosos: narigueras, orejeras, máscaras… ¡cosas que usaban los jefes y sacerdotes! La gente de La Tolita creía que el oro y el platino tenían poderes especiales.’
Maya replied, ‘They made beautiful ornaments: nose rings, ear spools, masks… things that chiefs and priests used! The people of La Tolita believed that gold and platinum had special powers.’
Pax imaginó a los artesanos trabajando arduamente, creando estas obras de arte. ‘¡De una! Qué chévere sería verlos trabajar.’
Pax imagined the artisans working hard, creating these works of art. ‘Of course! How cool would it be to see them work.’
Maya sonrió. ‘Quizás algún día podamos encontrar más evidencias de sus talleres.’ Señaló otra pequeña elevación de tierra. ‘¡Mira, Pax! Quizás aquí…’
Maya smiled. ‘Maybe someday we can find more evidence of their workshops.’ She pointed to another small rise in the ground. ‘Look, Pax! Maybe here…’
