Maya: ¡Pax, chévere que ya entiendes el valor del Spondylus! Pero, ¿sabías que Santa Elena también tiene historias de gigantes?
Maya: Pax, it’s awesome that you now understand the value of the Spondylus! But did you know that Santa Elena also has stories about giants?
Pax: ¿Gigantes? ¡De una! Cuéntame, Maya. ¿Eran más grandes que mi guagua hermana?
Pax: Giants? Awesome! Tell me, Maya. Were they bigger than my baby sister?
Maya: ¡Mucho más grandes, Pax! Cuenta la leyenda que antes de los Valdivia, o incluso junto a ellos, habitaban unos gigantes en la costa. Eran seres enormes, con una fuerza increíble.
Maya: Much bigger, Pax! Legend has it that before the Valdivia, or even alongside them, giants inhabited the coast. They were enormous beings, with incredible strength.
Pax: ¡Qué bestia! ¿Y qué hacían esos gigantes aquí? ¿Construían casas gigantes?
Pax: Wow! And what did those giants do here? Did they build giant houses?
Maya: Se dice que eran muy diferentes a los humanos. Algunos dicen que no sabían cultivar la tierra ni construir como los Valdivia. Vivían de lo que encontraban y eran muy altos.
Maya: It is said that they were very different from humans. Some say they didn’t know how to cultivate the land or build like the Valdivia. They lived off what they found and were very tall.
Pax: ¿Y qué pasó con ellos? ¿Se fueron a otro lado o se hicieron amigos de los Valdivia?
Pax: And what happened to them? Did they go somewhere else or did they become friends with the Valdivia?
Maya: Hay varias versiones, Pax. Una dice que una gran inundación los llevó. Otra cuenta que aprendieron de los Valdivia y poco a poco se fueron integrando, aunque su sangre gigante se fue diluyendo con el tiempo.
Maya: There are several versions, Pax. One says that a great flood took them away. Another says that they learned from the Valdivia and gradually integrated, although their giant blood was diluted over time.
Pax: ¡Qué loco! Entonces, ¿quizás yo tengo un poquito de sangre de gigante? ¡Por eso soy tan fuerte!
Pax: That’s crazy! So, maybe I have a little giant blood? That’s why I’m so strong!
Maya: (Risas) ¡Quizás sí, Pax! Pero lo importante es recordar estas historias, porque nos enseñan sobre el pasado de nuestra tierra y cómo diferentes culturas pudieron haber coexistido. Enero es un mes para honrar a todos los pueblos originarios, incluyendo a los posibles gigantes.
Maya: (Laughs) Maybe, Pax! But the important thing is to remember these stories, because they teach us about the past of our land and how different cultures could have coexisted. January is a month to honor all the original peoples, including the possible giants.
Pax: ¡Chévere! ¡A celebrar a los gigantes y a los Valdivia! ¿Qué tal si hacemos unas figuras de barro, unos gigantes y unos Valdivia, para poner en la casa?
Pax: Awesome! Let’s celebrate the giants and the Valdivia! How about we make some clay figures, some giants and some Valdivia, to put in the house?
Maya: ¡Me parece una idea genial, Pax! Así recordaremos estas leyendas.
Maya: That sounds like a great idea, Pax! That way we will remember these legends.
