Pax, con la concha Spondylus en mano, preguntó con entusiasmo, “¿Y ahora qué, Maya? ¡Cuéntame más de los Valdivia y esos gigantes!”
Pax, holding the Spondylus shell, excitedly asked, “What’s next, Maya? Tell me more about the Valdivia and those giants!”
Maya sonrió. “¡De una, Pax! Hoy vamos a hablar de cómo los Valdivia conseguían el ‘oro rojo’: la concha Spondylus. Era muy importante para ellos.”
Maya smiled. “Sure, Pax! Today we’ll talk about how the Valdivia obtained ‘red gold’: the Spondylus shell. It was very important to them.”
“¿Oro rojo? ¡Qué chévere! ¿Pero cómo la conseguían? ¿La encontraban en la playa?”, preguntó Pax.
“Red gold? How cool! But how did they get it? Did they find it on the beach?” Pax asked.
“No, guagua. Tenían que bucear. Imagínate, Pax, en enero, el mar puede ser un poco frío, pero los hombres Valdivia se sumergían profundo para encontrar las conchas. ¡Eran unos buceadores increíbles!”
“No, kid. They had to dive. Imagine, Pax, in January, the sea can be a bit cold, but the Valdivia men would dive deep to find the shells. They were incredible divers!”
Maya continuó: “Se preparaban con ofrendas al mar, pidiendo permiso y buena suerte. Creían que el mar era un lugar sagrado y que el Spondylus era un regalo de los dioses.”
Maya continued, “They prepared with offerings to the sea, asking for permission and good luck. They believed the sea was a sacred place and that the Spondylus was a gift from the gods.”
“¡Qué interesante! ¿Y qué hacían con las conchas después de sacarlas del agua?”, preguntó Pax.
“How interesting! And what did they do with the shells after taking them out of the water?” Pax asked.
“Las limpiaban, las pulían y las usaban para hacer adornos, cuentas y ofrendas. El Spondylus era tan valioso que lo intercambiaban con otras comunidades muy lejos. ¡Era como su moneda!”
“They cleaned them, polished them, and used them to make ornaments, beads, and offerings. The Spondylus was so valuable that they traded it with other communities far away. It was like their currency!”
Pax exclamó, “¡Entonces, los Valdivia no solo eran buenos agricultores, también eran buzos expertos y comerciantes! ¡Qué gente tan talentosa!”
Pax exclaimed, “So, the Valdivia were not only good farmers, but also expert divers and traders! What talented people!”
Maya asintió. “Así es, Pax. Y su conexión con el mar y la Spondylus era una parte esencial de su vida diaria y su cultura. ¡Mañana te contaré sobre cómo usaban la concha en sus ceremonias!”
Maya nodded. “That’s right, Pax. And their connection to the sea and the Spondylus was an essential part of their daily life and their culture. Tomorrow I’ll tell you about how they used the shell in their ceremonies!”
