A young girl looking in wonder at a drawing of an anglerfish that is coming off of the page to life

Agatha May and the Anglerfish

This was an awesome find – a new release that I had picked up at the library. The story is about a young girl, Agatha May, who is not a fan of school. She finds that she doesn’t quite fit in and is at odds with her teacher. By the end, however, she finds her passion in the mystery and intrigue of the Angler Fish and loses herself in a project researching it. It turns out that her teacher saw that spark of passion in her and had been trying to stoke the flame. The inspirational ending comes on the last page when we find a grown-up Agatha May coming face-to-face (through a small underwater exploration ship) with a real anglerfish.

The books is a delight to read because of the colorful illustrations and the fun rhyming scheme, but it is the end that really got to me. I loved being able to talk with my kids about how Agatha found something she was really passionate about and used that passion to fuel her discovery of knowledge about it, and ultimately, to find a way to meet the anglerfish. Setting goals, pursuing knowledge, and putting in the time and effort to achieve something incredible – definitely a lesson I thank this book for helping me relay.
