Maya sonrió a Pax, quien jugueteaba con la concha Spondylus. “¡Listo, guagua! Hoy te cuento cómo esta concha viajaba por todas partes, ¡mucho antes que existieran los carros!”
Maya smiled at Pax, who was playing with the Spondylus shell. “Ready, little one! Today I’ll tell you how this shell traveled everywhere, long before cars even existed!”
Pax alzó la vista, curioso. “¿De veras? ¿Cómo, Maya? ¡Cuéntame, cuéntame!”
Pax looked up, curious. “Really? How, Maya? Tell me, tell me!”
Maya se sentó a su lado. “Imagínate, Pax. La concha Spondylus era como un tesoro. La gente de Valdivia, hace miles de años, la usaba en ceremonias muy importantes. Pero esta concha no se encontraba solo aquí. ¡Venía desde muy lejos!”
Maya sat beside him. “Imagine, Pax. The Spondylus shell was like a treasure. The people of Valdivia, thousands of years ago, used it in very important ceremonies. But this shell wasn’t only found here. It came from very far away!”
“¿Desde dónde?” preguntó Pax, con los ojos brillantes.
“From where?” asked Pax, his eyes sparkling.
“Principalmente del norte, de las costas de lo que hoy es Ecuador y Perú. Los valdivianos eran unos expertos navegantes y comerciantes. Usaban balsas, embarcaciones hechas de madera y velas, para viajar por el mar.”
“Mainly from the north, from the coasts of what is now Ecuador and Peru. The Valdivians were expert navigators and traders. They used rafts, boats made of wood and sails, to travel by sea.”
Pax se imaginó las grandes balsas. “¡Chévere! ¿Y qué intercambiaban?”
Pax imagined the large rafts. “Cool! And what did they trade?”
Maya sonrió. “De todo un poco. Intercambiaban la concha Spondylus por otros productos que no tenían en Valdivia: obsidiana, que usaban para hacer herramientas; algodón de colores para tejer; y hasta comida especial. ¡Era como un gran mercado que se movía por el mar!”
Maya smiled. “All sorts of things. They exchanged the Spondylus shell for other products they didn’t have in Valdivia: obsidian, which they used to make tools; colorful cotton for weaving; and even special food. It was like a big market that moved by sea!”
Maya sacó un mapa de las Américas. “Mira, Pax. Estas líneas que ves aquí son las rutas de comercio. La concha Spondylus viajaba desde Ecuador hasta el sur, a lo que hoy es Chile, ¡e incluso hasta Mesoamérica, lo que hoy es México y Centroamérica!”
Maya pulled out a map of the Americas. “Look, Pax. These lines you see here are the trade routes. The Spondylus shell traveled from Ecuador to the south, to what is now Chile, and even to Mesoamerica, what is now Mexico and Central America!”
Pax observó el mapa asombrado. “¡Guau! ¡Eso es un viaje larguísimo!”
Pax looked at the map in amazement. “Wow! That’s a very long trip!”
Maya asintió. “Así es. Estas rutas permitieron que diferentes culturas se conectaran y compartieran sus ideas y conocimientos. ¡Es como si la concha Spondylus fuera un mensaje viajero!”
Maya nodded. “That’s right. These routes allowed different cultures to connect and share their ideas and knowledge. It’s as if the Spondylus shell was a traveling message!”
“A ver, Pax,” dijo Maya con una sonrisa, “¡un pequeño quiz para ver si estabas prestando atención! ¿De dónde venía principalmente la concha Spondylus?”
“Okay, Pax,” Maya said with a smile, “a little quiz to see if you were paying attention! Where did the Spondylus shell mainly come from?”
Pax pensó un momento. “Mmm… ¡Del norte! De Ecuador y Perú!”
Pax thought for a moment. “Mmm… From the north! From Ecuador and Peru!”
“¡De una! ¡Muy bien! Y ahora, ¿qué tipo de embarcaciones usaban para viajar?”
“Awesome! Very good! And now, what kind of boats did they use to travel?”
“¡Balsas!” respondió Pax, orgulloso.
“Rafts!” replied Pax, proudly.
Maya le dio un abrazo. “¡Excelente, Pax! ¡Eres un experto en rutas ancestrales! Mañana te cuento más sobre las ceremonias con la concha Spondylus, ¡chévere!”
Maya gave him a hug. “Excellent, Pax! You’re an expert on ancient routes! Tomorrow I’ll tell you more about the ceremonies with the Spondylus shell, cool!”
