Maya: ¡De una, Pax! Hagamos las figuras de barro. Pero primero, ¿sabes qué es un chamán?
Maya: Of course, Pax! Let’s make the clay figures. But first, do you know what a shaman is?
Pax: Mmm… ¿un señor que hace magia? ¡Como en las películas! ¿Va a aparecer un dragón?
Pax: Mmm… a man who does magic? Like in the movies! Is a dragon going to appear?
Maya: (Ríe) No exactamente. En la cultura Valdivia, el chamán era muy importante. Era como el doctor, el consejero, ¡y hasta el meteorólogo!
Maya: (Laughs) Not exactly. In the Valdivia culture, the shaman was very important. He was like the doctor, the counselor, and even the weatherman!
Pax: ¿El meteorólogo? ¿Sabía si iba a llover para jugar al fútbol?
Pax: The weatherman? Did he know if it was going to rain so he could play soccer?
Maya: Más o menos. Observaba la naturaleza y usaba sus conocimientos para predecir el clima y las cosechas. También curaba a la gente con plantas y rituales.
Maya: More or less. He observed nature and used his knowledge to predict the weather and the harvests. He also healed people with plants and rituals.
Pax: ¡Chévere! ¿Y cómo sabían quién iba a ser el chamán? ¿Hacían un casting?
Pax: Cool! And how did they know who was going to be the shaman? Did they hold auditions?
Maya: No creo que tuvieran castings, Pax. Generalmente, se creía que tenían un don especial desde que eran guaguas, o que lo aprendían de otro chamán. Imagina que el chamán era como un puente entre el mundo de los humanos y el mundo de los espíritus.
Maya: I don’t think they had auditions, Pax. Generally, it was believed that they had a special gift since they were babies, or that they learned it from another shaman. Imagine that the shaman was like a bridge between the human world and the world of spirits.
Pax: ¡Como el Spondylus! ¿El chamán también tenía un Spondylus?
Pax: Like the Spondylus! Did the shaman also have a Spondylus?
Maya: ¡Buena pregunta! Es muy probable. El Spondylus era sagrado para ellos. Lo usaban en ceremonias para atraer la lluvia y la buena suerte. Ahora, vamos a hacer una figura de barro de un chamán con su Spondylus, ¿qué tal?
Maya: Good question! It’s very likely. The Spondylus was sacred to them. They used it in ceremonies to attract rain and good luck. Now, let’s make a clay figure of a shaman with his Spondylus, how about that?
