The attic dissolved into a blinding light as Pax and Maya touched the Spondylus shell. Just like that, they were in a completely new place.
Maya se ajustó sus gafas. “¿Dónde estamos, Pax?”
Maya adjusted her glasses. “Where are we, Pax?”
Pax looked around, his eyes shining. “Cool! It looks like the coast, but like… in the past! Look at that ship, Maya! It looks like a pirate ship!”
In front of them, a bustling port town buzzed with activity. Tall ships with tattered sails bobbed in the harbor, and sailors shouted in a mix of languages. The air smelled of salt, fish, and exotic spices.
Maya, always the most studious, pulled out her notebook. “Wait, Pax. According to my research, the Spondylus shell can transport us to different moments in Ecuador’s history. We must be in the age of pirates!”
Just then, a gruff voice called out, “¡Eh, guaguas! ¿Qué andan mirando?”
“Hey, kids! What are you staring at?”
A large man with a bandanna and a parrot perched on his shoulder approached them. He wore a tattered coat and had a mischievous glint in his eye.
“Haven’t you ever seen a pirate before? I’m Captain Blackbeard, and this is my port!”
Pax sonrió ampliamente. “¡Capitán Barbanegra! ¡Qué chévere! Maya, ¡esto es increíble!”
Pax grinned widely. “Captain Blackbeard! How cool! Maya, this is incredible!”
Maya, however, looked cautious. “Captain, it’s an honor to meet you. We are just travelers, exploring the history of Ecuador.”
El Capitán Barbanegra se rió. “¿Historia, dices? ¡Bah!
Captain Blackbeard laughed. “History, you say? Bah! The only history that matters is the history of treasure! But, since you’re here, maybe you can help me find something…”
He leaned closer, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper.
“I’m looking for the ‘Golden Bean’! They say it brings good luck for the New Year!”
