[Narrador] Pax y Maya empezaron su búsqueda del ‘eco de valor’ en las faldas del Pichincha, esperando descubrir una pista relacionada con la Batalla de Pichincha. El sol de agosto brillaba fuerte.
[Narrator] Pax and Maya began their search for the ‘echo of valor’ in the foothills of Pichincha, hoping to uncover a clue related to the Battle of Pichincha. The August sun shone brightly.
[Maya] A ver, Pax, la pista dice: ‘Donde la piedra llora sal y el oro del inca se encuentra, allí el eco del valor resonará.’ ¡Qué raro!
[Maya] Let’s see, Pax, the clue says: ‘Where the stone cries salt and the Inca’s gold is found, there the echo of valor will resonate.’ How strange!
[Pax] ¡Achachay! ¡Hace frío aquí arriba, ñaña! Pero, ¿’piedra que llora sal’? Eso suena como… ¡una cueva con estalactitas!
[Pax] Achachay! It’s cold up here, ñaña! But, ‘stone that cries salt’? That sounds like… a cave with stalactites!
[Narrador] Caminaron cuesta arriba, con el volcán Pichincha vigilándolos desde arriba. Después de una hora, encontraron una pequeña abertura en la roca, casi escondida por la vegetación.
[Narrator] They walked uphill, with the Pichincha volcano watching over them from above. After an hour, they found a small opening in the rock, almost hidden by the vegetation.
[Maya] Taita Dios, ¡mira! Parece una cueva. Podría ser la ‘piedra que llora sal’. Ten cuidado, Pax.
[Maya] Taita Dios, look! It looks like a cave. It could be the ‘stone that cries salt’. Be careful, Pax.
[Pax] ¡Chévere! Voy primero. (Pax entra a la cueva con cautela).
[Pax] Chévere! I’ll go first. (Pax cautiously enters the cave).
[Narrador] La cueva era oscura y húmeda. El goteo constante de agua creaba pequeñas piscinas saladas en el suelo. De repente, Pax gritó.
[Narrator] The cave was dark and damp. The constant dripping of water created small salty pools on the floor. Suddenly, Pax yelled.
[Maya] ¡Pax! ¿Qué pasa? (Maya entra rápidamente a la cueva).
[Maya] Pax! What’s wrong? (Maya quickly enters the cave).
[Pax] ¡Mira, Maya! ¡Una calavera! Y… ¡monedas!
[Pax] Look, Maya! A skull! And… coins!
[Narrador] Junto a la calavera, había un cofre pequeño lleno de monedas antiguas, desgastadas por el tiempo. También había un objeto dorado que brillaba a la luz de la linterna de Maya.
[Narrator] Next to the skull, there was a small chest full of ancient coins, worn by time. There was also a golden object that shone in the light of Maya’s flashlight.
[Maya] ¡Uy! Esto parece un mito de piratas, Pax. ¡Una cueva escondida! Pero no estamos en la costa… ¡Qué raro!
[Maya] Oh! This looks like a pirate myth, Pax. A hidden cave! But we’re not on the coast… How strange!
[Pax] ¿Piratas en la sierra? ¡Eso es imposible!
[Pax] Pirates in the mountains? That’s impossible!
[Maya] No exactamente imposible, ñaño. Verás, durante la época colonial, los piratas no solo atacaban barcos en el mar. A veces, ¡también asaltaban ciudades costeras! Subían por los ríos, saqueaban pueblos y escondían su botín en lugares secretos, ¡incluso en las montañas cerca de Quito!
[Maya] Not exactly impossible, ñaño. You see, during the colonial era, pirates didn’t just attack ships at sea. Sometimes, they also raided coastal cities! They went up rivers, looted towns, and hid their loot in secret places, even in the mountains near Quito!
[Pax] ¡No sabía eso! ¿Y qué es eso dorado?
[Pax] I didn’t know that! And what’s that golden thing?
[Maya] Parece un ‘grano dorado’… una haba de cacao cubierta de oro. Quizás esto era parte del botín que robaron los piratas. Y tal vez… ¡aquí está nuestro ‘eco de valor’! Esta valentía… o la falta de ella… ¡al robar a otros!
[Maya] It looks like a ‘golden bean’… a cocoa bean covered in gold. Perhaps this was part of the loot the pirates stole. And maybe… here is our ‘echo of valor’! This bravery… or lack of it… in stealing from others!
[Pax] ¡De una! Pero, ¿cómo nos ayuda esto con la Batalla de Pichincha?
[Pax] De una! But how does this help us with the Battle of Pichincha?
[Maya] Espera… hay algo escrito en la parte de atrás del grano dorado…
[Maya] Wait… there’s something written on the back of the golden bean…
