[Narrador] Era una tarde lluviosa en Cuenca. Pax y Maya, aburridos, exploraban el ático polvoriento de su Abuelo.
[Narrator] It was a rainy afternoon in Cuenca. Pax and Maya, bored, explored their Grandfather’s dusty attic.
[Pax] ¡Achachay! ¡Qué aburrido, ñaño! No hay nada chévere aquí.
[Pax] Brrr! How boring, brother! There’s nothing cool here.
[Maya] ¡Mira, Pax! ¡Una caja!
[Maya] Look, Pax! A box!
[Narrador] Maya encontró una vieja caja de madera tallada con símbolos extraños. Dentro, encontraron una concha roja, polvorienta y puntiaguda.
[Narrator] Maya found an old, wooden box carved with strange symbols. Inside, they found a dusty, red, spiky seashell.
[Maya] ¡Guau! ¡Abuelo tiene una concha Spondylus!
[Maya] Wow! Abuelo has a Spondylus shell!
[Pax] ¿Una… qué? ¿Y eso qué es?
[Pax] A… what? And what is that?
[Maya] Abuelo nos contó. ¡Es la ‘concha roja’, el ‘oro rojo’ de nuestros ancestros! La usaban para el comercio y los rituales. Era muy valiosa, ¡más que el oro! La intercambiaban entre los pueblos de la costa y la sierra, ¡incluso hasta los Incas la querían, ñaño!
[Maya] Abuelo told us. It’s the ‘red shell,’ the ‘red gold’ of our ancestors! They used it for trade and rituals. It was very valuable, more than gold! They traded it between the people of the coast and the highlands, even the Incas wanted it, brother!
[Pax] ¡Chévere! ¿Crees que sea mágica?
[Pax] Cool! Do you think it’s magical?
[Maya] No sé… pero intentemos tocarla al mismo tiempo, ¿de una?
[Maya] I don’t know… but let’s try touching it at the same time, okay?
[Narrador] Se tocaron la concha. Empezó a brillar con un resplandor cálido y a zumbar.
[Narrator] They touched the shell. It began to glow with a warm light and hum.
[Pax] ¡Mira! ¡Está brillando!
[Pax] Look! It’s glowing!
[Maya] ¡Dios mío! ¿Qué está pasando?
[Maya] My goodness! What is happening?
[Narrador] El cuarto empezó a disolverse en luz.
[Narrator] The room began to dissolve into light.
