The Word Slicer

If you are supporting a child through a Structured Literacy program (like Lexercise, Wilson, or Barton), you know that the leap from simple words to multi-syllabic text is huge.

To help my son reinforce these advanced concepts on the go, I developed a browser-based game called The Word Slicer. It is designed to turn the abstract concept of “syllabication” into a tactile, visual game.

While I built this to complement the end of the Lexercise curriculum, it is generally applicable to any reader working on:

  • Decoding multisyllabic words (breaking long words into chunks).
  • The VCCV “Rabbit” Rule (splitting between consonants).
  • Morphology (identifying and separating prefixes and suffixes).

How to Play:

  1. Select a Level: Choose a specific rule (like VCCV) or try the “Challenge Mix.”
  2. Slice: Tap the space between letters to “cut” the word where the syllable break belongs.
  3. Check: See if you are right instantly!
